The Studio built from complaints (and why that’s brilliant)

Updated: Apr 25

What really makes That Alternative Studio different?

I could say it’s the equipment the lights, the endless backdrops, the cool props, but that’s not what makes That Alternative Studio special.

Truth is, this didn’t start with a big investment or a perfect business plan. It started, like so many creative ventures do, in my dining room. Yep, right between the kettle and the cat.

Back then, I had a brilliant job that required me to create a lot of content, videos, photos, brand assets you name it. I needed studio-quality space, but I didn’t have it. So I made do with a blank wall, some good lighting, and a ton of creative energy. When we needed something fancier, we’d head to studios in the North East or even London. And don’t get me wrong those places were amazing. Great vibes, great people. But the travel? Draining.

When I looked for a local studio in Blackpool, there just wasn’t one, and I didn’t want just a photography studio I needed a place where I could do hair, hold meetings, record podcasts, create video content, mentor others, and have a proper brew while doing it.

So I used my years of experience, and all the feedback I’d heard from other creatives over the years, to build my first proper space. I finally claimed back my dining room, and just like that, That Alternative Studio was born.

Originally, it was a selfish move a creative home just for me. But what I didn’t expect was how quickly it would become a home for others too.

When I wasn’t there, someone else was. Friends, fellow creatives, new businesses all building their dreams in the same space I’d built for mine. It was magic. I wasn’t just renting out a room; I was building a community. And as someone with a background in education and mentoring, it felt natural to offer support, advice, and a bit of northern cheer while I was at it.

That Alternative, Take Two

Then… we outgrew it. Gloriously, chaotically, completely.

That lovely open-plan room that worked so well for me and a few creative mates? It was bursting at the seams. And just when I was about to sign on an industrial unit (sensible, but soulless), the current building popped up and it was perfect.

Two floors: one for the content studio, one for creative co-working. A proper little creative HQ.

But again, I didn’t kit it out with flashy gimmicks I focused on the small stuff that makes a big difference:

  • A backwash basin in the hair room

  • Non-slip mats for make-up

  • Sanitary products in the loo (because obviously)

  • Benches with actual plug sockets (wild concept, right?)

  • Non-slip hangers in the dressing area

  • Snack draw for the too busy for lunchers!

Every little detail came from years of hearing what didn’t work elsewhere. I listened. I learned. And I built a space that solved those problems.

What started as a solution for me has turned into a space that serves the community and that’s something I’m properly proud of.

I didn’t go looking for a creative family when I stopped travelling and put down roots in Blackpool, but in the words of Bob Ross it was a happy little accident.

And one I’ll never take for granted.
